Internship Opportunities in Special Collections

Do you have an especially bright and motivated student who wants some hands-on training and experience working directly with historical manuscripts, archival collections, and rare materials? Special Collections is looking for a couple of good interns for Fall 2008. Though many internships focus on processing manuscript and archival collections, they can focus on many other skill sets useful to historians-in-training, such as preservation, reference, instruction, or outreach, according to the student's interests and our current needs. Interns will follow a syllabus of reading assignments, have weekly individualized instruction with one of our staff, and produce a major written assignment (like a finding aid or bibliography) in addition to a final paper.

Candidates should be enthusiastic upper division undergrads or graduate students, and possess excellent writing and communication skills. The most successful candidates are usually interested in pursuing a career in special collections librarianship, museum studies, or public history. Internships are competitive--students should contact us as soon as possible if interested, and expect to have a formal interview. Please note: positions will only be available as our staffing situation permits--at this time we anticipate having slots for two interns. Internships are unpaid, but academic credit can be awarded for undergraduates. Please consult Sarah Elkind for more information about undergraduate academic credit through the History Department, and Anne Bahde in Special Collections for more information about internship possibilities.
